macOS Wine-based Installation Guide

QDA Miner, WordStat, SimStat, and ProSuite are Windows applications. They can also be used on macOS through Wine, a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on a Mac without installing Windows or using a virtual machine.

We offer four installation methods. Choose the one that best suits your situation:

    • Method 1 – Porting Kit: recommended if you do not already own CrossOver or Parallels.
    • Method 2 – Terminal script:  downloads, installs, and prepares the application using a small command file.
    • Method 3 – PKG Installer: simple installer, but may require a one-time macOS security confirmation.
    • Method 4 – Crossover: for users who already own CrossOver (paid software)
ℹ About the macOS compatibility notice
Starting with macOS 26 Tahoe, Apple may display a notice when opening Intel-based applications or components on Apple Silicon Macs through Rosetta. This is expected and does not necessarily prevent the software from running. Apple currently states that Rosetta remains available through macOS 27. Starting with macOS 28, most Rosetta functionality will be removed, except for limited support for certain older games. We will update this guide as Apple and Wine compatibility evolves.

Method 1 - Porting Kit

Porting Kit is a free, well-established Mac application used by thousands of users to run Windows software via Wine. Our .wsi3 script file automates the entire setup. Porting Kit reads it and builds a ready-to-run Wine environment on your Mac automatically. An internet connection is required during setup.

Step-by-step instructions

    1. Download and install Porting Kit (free) from portingkit.com.

⚠ Gatekeeper security warning

If macOS blocks Porting Kit from opening:
Right-click the Porting Kit app and choose Open, then click Open again in the dialog that appears.
Alternatively: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
This is a one-time step.

    1. Download the .wsi3 file for your product from the table below.
    2. Double-click the .wsi3 file. Porting Kit will open automatically and begin setting up the Wine environment. This may take several minutes depending on your internet connection.
    3. When setup is complete, the application will appear in Porting Kit’s library under the Installed tab. Click Play to launch it.

METHOD 2 - Terminal Script

A small command file can download, install, and prepare the application in one step. This method does not require any additional software, but it is intended for users who are comfortable allowing a Terminal script to run.

Step-by-step instructions

    1. Download the command file for your product from the table below.
    2.  Open the downloaded command file. If macOS displays a security warning, Control-click the file, choose Open, then confirm that you want to open it.
    3. If macOS asks for your password, enter your Mac login password. This may be required to install into the Applications folder.
    4. Wait for the download and installation to complete. The download time depends mostly on your internet connection.
    5. When installation is complete, open the application from your Applications folder or Launchpad.

METHOD 3- PKG Installer

A standard macOS installer package that places the application directly in your Applications folder. No third-party software is required. Because Apple cannot verify Wine-based software through its standard notarization process, a one-time security confirmation may be needed the first time you run the installer.

Step-by-step instructions

    1. Download the PKG file for your product from the table below.
    2. Double-click the downloaded .pkg file to launch the installer.

⚠ Gatekeeper security warning

If macOS displays a message saying it cannot verify the installer:

1. Click Done to dismiss the dialog.
2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
3. Scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the blocked file.
4. Confirm by clicking Open Anyway again in the dialog that appears.

This is a one-time step. You will not need to repeat it.

    1. Follow the installer steps: review the licence agreement, then click Install. Enter your Mac password when prompted.
    2. Once complete, open the application from your Applications folder or Launchpad. No further setup is required.

Method 4 - Using Crossover

CrossOver is a commercial Wine application from CodeWeavers that provides a polished, signed, and fully notarized environment for running Windows software on Mac. If you already own CrossOver, our installation script sets up the application in a dedicated CrossOver bottle automatically. CrossOver is available from codeweavers.com (paid, approximately $74 USD one-time or subscription).

Step-by-step instructions

      1. Make sure CrossOver is installed and activated on your Mac.
      2. Download the CrossOver installer script for your product from the table below.
      3. Double-click the downloaded file. CrossOver will open and guide you through creating a dedicated bottle for the application.
      4. Once installation is complete, the application will appear in CrossOver’s list of installed programs. Click it to launch.
